Andaman and Nicobar Islands


The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a huge archipelago of more than 500 tropical islands situated in the Bay of Bengal. It joined the Indian Union in 1950 and was constituted as a Union Territory of India on November 1, 1956. The islands are India's third largest Union Territory by geographical size, and ranks fifth on the Human Development Index. Despite their great size, the islands are sparsely populated and divided into three distinct districts.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, being a Union Territory of India, have one seat in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India.

The 2024 Indian general election in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is scheduled for April 19, 2024, as part of the first phase. It aims to elect the sole representative of the 18th Lok Sabha from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Consequently, there won't be multiple phases for this constituency. The deadline for filing nominations for the Lok Sabha 2024 Election was March 27, 2024.

2019 Election History


In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kuldeep Rai Sharma, representing the Indian National Congress, won the Andaman and Nicobar Islands constituency with 95,308 votes. Despite the BJP's significant vote share of 44.21%, Sharma won the seat by a small margin of 1,407 votes over his nearest challenger, Vishal Jolly of the BJP. This highly competitive election saw a voter turnout of 65.18%, indicating that the electorate is actively involved in shaping the islands' political scene. A total of 16 candidates contested for the seat, showing the varied political spectrum and the importance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in Indian electoral politics.
